At the heart of ALTO's mission is our monthly outreach initiative, where volunteers gather across Arizona to connect directly with day laborers in their communities. Each month, the ALTO team visits different locations — such as gas stations, Home Depots, and other informal labor pickup sites — to engage with workers who are often at high risk for labor trafficking. During these events, volunteers distribute essentials like snacks, protective equipment, clothing, and multilingual educational materials about labor rights and trafficking prevention. For those interested, we also offer a brief, voluntary survey to better understand the lived experiences of laborers and identify patterns of exploitation. This outreach not only provides immediate support but also helps build trust and gather critical data to inform ALTO's broader advocacy and training efforts.
As part of our commitment to supporting laborers beyond the job site, ALTO hosts a Worker Rights Resource Fair — a community-centered event designed to empower, educate, and equip workers with the tools they need to protect themselves from exploitation. At the fair, attendees receive access to a wide range of free resources including clothing, safety gear, legal information, health support, and multilingual educational materials. The event brings together local organizations, service providers, and volunteers to create a welcoming, informative space where laborers can learn about their rights, connect with support networks, and feel seen and valued. It's more than a fair — it's a celebration of worker dignity and a powerful step toward ending labor trafficking.
To turn community experience into meaningful insight, ALTO collects survey responses during each outreach event and transforms that data into powerful visualizations. Led by our in-house data analyst, we clean, organize, and analyze the information shared by day laborers to uncover trends, challenges, and patterns related to labor trafficking and worker vulnerability. This process helps us better understand the realities workers face — and allows partners, advocates, and the public to engage with the data in a clear, accessible way. Through interactive dashboards and summaries, ALTO makes data-driven advocacy possible, ensuring that every story gathered in the field contributes to lasting systems change.
