Discrimination

  • You have the right to be treated fairly and with dignity at work. It is illegal for an employer to treat you differently or unfairly because of who you are.
  • Federal and state laws protect workers from discrimination based on:
  • Age (if you are 40 or older)
  • Gender or sex
  • Race
  • National origin or ethnicity
  • Skin color
  • Religion
  • Disability
  • Genetic information, including family medical history
  • These protections apply to hiring, pay, job assignments, training, promotions, and firing. They also apply to how you are treated on the job.
  • Your employer cannot treat you unfairly because you are a woman, because you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are nursing. This includes denying breaks, making offensive comments, or limiting your job opportunities.
  • You also have the right to speak up about discrimination without being punished or fired.
